Fasting the month of Ramadan became obligatory in the second year of Hijra and the prophet (pbuh) completed the fast of nine months of Ramadan throughout his entire life.At the initial stage, a person has a choice either to fast or not to fast but the person who chooses not to fast will have to compensate (the days he declined fasting) by feeding one poor person for each day. Eventually, this was abrogated and fasting became obligatory.
